Deep Tissue Manipulation
Deep massage should only be used on chronic conditions (long standing), it is used to break down scar tissue or fibrosis (inflammation of fibrous tissue)
Some athletes are led to believe that deep massage is the way to go. Used at the wrong time or, even worse, as a ‘good massage’ can prolong the injury and healing process sometimes causing more damage than injury itself.
DTM is where the therapist finds scar tissue, applies pressure on the scar by way of deep frictions in order to disperse and break down injured tissue.
When DTM is used it can be painful leaving the athlete feeling discomfort for up to twenty-four hours. This treatment should not be a one off and it may take a few visits before the full benefit is reached.

ULTRASOUND
The use of ultrasound helps to break down scar tissue and the like quicker and without pain; ultrasound and DTM used together would have quicker results.
Ultrasound in sports therapy is more often used in combination with other modalities and rehabilitation exercises for the treatment of muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. Being regarded as a deep treatment tool, and having both thermal and non-thermal effects, ultrasound may be used for a selection of purposes, and it can be used to treat acute, sub acute and chronic injuries.
Effects of deep frictions:
- Can help to relieve pain
- Reduces and prevents adhesions in post-acute injuries
- Treats lesions in muscle, tendon, ligament & other connective tissues
- Helps to improve joint mobility and muscle extensibility
Deep frictions are also effective for repetitive strain (overuse) injuries, such as tendinosis, and plantar fascitis.
